About Family Sums

Family Sums is a small, independent website of calculators for parents, carers and students in the UK. It answers the practical money and date questions that come up from pregnancy to graduation, such as which school year a child is in, what nursery will cost after funded hours, or how much a student loan takes from your pay.

Many of these answers depend on which nation you live in. We build each tool to handle England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland where the rules differ, and we say clearly when a tool covers only one nation.

Who runs the site

Who checks the calculators

Each section will be reviewed by someone qualified in that area: a teacher or school admissions specialist for school tools, a student finance adviser for student tools, and a childcare funding or payroll specialist for early years tools. Their names and credentials will appear on every page they review. Until then, pages say “Reviewer to be confirmed”.

How the site is paid for

The calculators are free. We plan to pay for the site with advertising. Ads will never appear between a calculator’s inputs and its result, and we will not take payment to change a result or recommend a product.

We are not the government

Family Sums has no link to GOV.UK, the Department for Education, Student Finance England, Student Finance Wales, SAAS, UCAS or any council. For decisions about your own case, use the official services we link to.
